Population of World in Urban Areas

The above bar chart presents the world population (percentage) in urban areas during the year 1950 and compares it with percentage population in 2007 and the projected percentage population in 2030.

The proportion of world's population (living in the urban areas) is expected to be double in 2030 than that of its value in 1950, growing from 29% to 60%. However, this growth rate is different for different continents.

For instance, 64% of North America's population was living in urban areas during 1950 , and this percentage increased to 79% in 2007. In contrast, just 15% of the Africa's population was urban in 1950, but this percentage rose to 37% in 2007.
